It also takes idiotic, unconvincing, bigoted, extreme-left potshots at death penalty advocates, conservative Christians, the South, Republicans, and President Bush. This is truly one loathsome movie. Kevin Spacey plays the title role, David Gale, an anti-death penalty advocate who just happens to be a philosophy professor at the University of Texas at Austin, the state capitol. Gale proclaims his innocence, even though there is evidence placing him at the crime scene. Slowly, the reporter, and the silly intern accompanying her, discover that Gale just may be telling the truth. Or, is he? Kevin Spacey stumbles through this role like his character stumbles during the scenes showing his drunken alcoholic stupors.

Alan Parker, the British director of "The Life of David Gale," calls his new film about the death penalty in Texas "a thriller with a polemical heart. It sends them off with flares and bonfires. Even for those who can see the trick outcome from miles away much of Texas is flat , this highly political, sometimes condescending view of the Western heartland offers potent acting and taut drama to counterbalance its caricatures and improbabilities. Parker, whose impressive career has ranged from "Midnight Express" to "Angela's Ashes," often has proved a vital filmmaker, even when his storytelling feels problematical and he remains a minor master of his craft. One problem with "David Gale" arises from the casting of Kevin Spacey , virtually a Brit himself through his new role as artistic director of London's illustrious but troubled Old Vic, in the title role.
