It is the eleventh in the main series thirteenth in Japan in the Mario Party series and the second installment for a handheld console. Displeased by the outcome, the gang decides to head for the castle to settle the score with Bowser. The desire to be the one Superstar that defeats Bowser and his cronies causes Mario and his other seven friends to pit themselves against each other for the title along the way. The Piranha Plant is eventually defeated by the character who becomes the Superstar, leading to Wiggler rewarding them with a Sky Crystal that landed in his garden.

The player gets five hearts served as a Health Meter while Bowser only has three. First, he turns into a spinning top and spins around the arena, shooting fire from the Golden Bowser Block. After a while, he cloaks himself in fire. Eventually, he stops, the flames dissipate, and falls over. The player then punches or kicks the Golden Bowser Block five times to defeat that form and turn him into his next form. In his next form, he becomes a large cube and moves like a Tox Box. After moving, he shoots fire from Bowser Tiles on his side. The player must punch or kick the Golden Bowser Block five times when it comes to the ground.
It is the last Mario Party game to be developed by Hudson Soft , who was replaced on the franchise by Nd Cube in As with most Mario Party games, an emphasis is placed on the game's multiplayer aspect. A new element to the series is the use of the Download Play functionality of the Nintendo DS to allow four people to play wirelessly using only one game card. The party mode game is played by using a ten-sided "dice block" and moving the player accordingly. There are many things such as "mole shops", "happening", "blue", "red" and "Bowser Time" spaces that can help or hinder game progress. There are several themed game environments. Mole Shops offer special dice, like the option to role up to 3 at once. Mario Party DS features a total of 74 minigames , most of which utilize the unique features of the DS.
